AGAPE MISSION SCHOOL - How it all began?

Vachan Singh Bhandari was born in Bareth, a remote village in the Garhwal hills of Uttarakhand. His father had passed away before he was born, and the people of his village blamed him for it. Every misfortune that touched his family was laid at his feet. When his elder brother drowned in a mountain river, the blame only grew heavier. By the time he turned twelve, Vachan had grown up carrying a weight no child should bear. He decided to leave

With no plan and no certainty, Vachan walked away from his village. He spent his first night sheltered in a temple. The next morning, he crossed paths with a government school teacher and that meeting would alter the course of his life forever. The teacher took Vachan into his home and made him a simple promise: I will educate you. What followed was more than schooling. When Vachan fell gravely ill, the teacher nursed him back to health with a selflessness that left a permanent mark. It was not just knowledge this teacher imparted. It was a living example of what it means to serve another human being with unconditional love. That imprint never left Vachan.

As he grew in learning and in faith, Vachan never stopped thinking about the children he had left behind in the mountains. Children like himself, full of potential, but without access to good education. In 1982, that concern became action. Prem Pathshala was established in Tongiya, Gumaniwala, Rishikesh as a school for the children of displaced Garhwali families. The work spoke for itself. Seeing Vachan's dedication, community leaders approached him to expand his vision. In 1990, Agape Mission School was founded in Rishikesh, built on the same principle that had transformed its founder's life.

At Agape, we value every student as an individual. Our aim is not simply academic achievement. It is the holistic development of each child, intellectually, personally, and in character. We are a small school by choice. That intimacy allows us to build genuine bonds between teachers and students, while still offering strong academic, athletic, and co-curricular programmes. We have not forgotten where we came from. A single teacher changed one boy's life. That is the standard we hold ourselves to, every day, in every classroom. Teachers make the difference. We will continue doing that.
